Hey guys, I have a little question/problem I’m hoping someone can share their thoughts on.
I’m a graphic designer who has both worked for a company and freelanced. I have a design Instagram which I try to build up, and I’m using my “company name” for it – I was recommended to do so when I was in college, as to seem more professional. However, I don’t get any new clients from Instagram. I’ve been getting all my clients through word of mouth – so they only know my real name.
I have accounts on Dribbble, Behance etc, and it hasn’t ever occured to me to use my company name on them. I’m representing me, so I’m using my name. And I recently realized the brand inconsistency of my work on different platforms.
I’ve read up on the topic (real name vs business name for freelancers), and it seems that it’s best to use a company name only if you plan on getting more employees or selling your business later. I don’t plan on doing any of that, as of now. However, a business name would indeed sound more serious and professional.
there is another part of the story. I’m hesitant about creating a personal brand for graphic design because I’m also a musician. I have a music Instagram, I make YouTube videos and release music under my real name.
Sems like the best idea would be to combine everything I do under one personal brand. But I feel like it would work better for someone who does more similar things , like design and illustration. With things I do being so different, I feel like combining two brands would be out of place. I can vaguely imagine creating a music section and a design section on my website, but that still doesn’t seem so right. Combining two Instagrams seems even more weird – my music Instagram audience wouldn’t be interested in design content and vice versa.
hope this makes sense to you guys. Thank you for reading. Looking for any insight or thoughts 🙂
