Walmart on Monday named two powerhouse executives—who also happen to be women—to fill two of the retailer’s most critical roles. Walmart U.S. named Janey Whiteside to fill the company’s newly-created role of chief customer officer, while naming Barbara Messing as Chief Marketing officer.
Whiteside (right), an American Express veteran who most recently was EVP and GM of global premium products and benefits, joins on Aug. 1. She will be based in Hoboken, NJ, which is home to Walmart’s Jet.com business unit.
“I’m so excited to be joining Walmart and its awesome, talented team,” she wrote on LinkedIn. “Retail is going through immense change and it’s an incredible time in the industry. If there is anything I have learned in my more than 20 years with American Express it’s that creating an end-to-end experience for customers is paramount. This new role is a step change for Walmart and it reflects the company’s passion for keeping the customer at the center of everything it does. As (Walmart U.S. CEO) Greg Foran and (E-Commerce CEO) Marc Lore put it, “we know when we put customers first, we win.”
Joining her team: Barbara Messing (left), most recently Chief Marketing Officer at TripAdvisor, who will become SVP and CMO of Walmart in mid-August. She will be based at Walmart’s Bentonville, Arkansas, global HQ and lead marketing for both Walmart stores and its e-commerce operations.
Messing will replace Tony Rogers, who joined Sam’s Club earlier this year as chief member officer. “I am absolutely thrilled to announce that I will be joining Walmart as SVP and Chief Marketing Officer this August,” she shared on LinkedIn.
Whiteside will work to draw in new customers and will use her 20 years of experience at American Express to attract younger customers and grow rewards card membership. “After getting to know Janey, we think her respect for the Walmart brand and belief in our core mission make her the best person to take on this important new role,” Foran and Lore commented in a company-wide memo.
